COBY

Pastel 8"x10"

An adorable fluff ball with wistful eyes - friend to Rocky (see Jan 22) and greatly loved by Lauren.    Hope this keeps the good memories alive.

OH DEAR!

"The Nestling" flew out the door a day early!
Thus latest email advice
contained two days worth of portraits.

SOOOO, for those on email, nothing but this arrives Wednesday am; next portrait post Thursday.

Obfuscation
Monday's work, and post, goes out at stroke of midnight, thus Monday's work arrives by email Tuesday.   But somehow Nestling post, tho it SAYS Tuesday, went out Monday.  So that means those on email will get this Wednesday, and Wednesday's artwork on Thursday. Got it? I'm not sure I have.

Travellin' Through

The Nestling

Color Pencil on Blue Pastel Paper  6"x9"

Her name's MacKenzie, nestling down to sleep as she's held in someone's arms.  She's been waiting for adoption since September 2010 when eleven-eleven rescued her from being euthanised.  She was emaciated - with kittens - and already pregnant again.  At under a year old, she was only a kitten herself.

For information on how to adopt MacKenzie, or to donate, please contact eleven-eleven HERE.

GOLDILOCKS

Color Pencil 7"x9"

She has tresses, not ears!  And perhaps she's a little "snooty".
A lovely girl in any case.

FLOORED!

Pastel 9"x6"

Ignore the colors - if you can.
My goal was freehand to capture what I saw, and to play with light and shade.  The palette may not be to your taste, but it was a good process for me.
The original is below.   The name is Ulle and HE appears in a more natural pallete, different pose, 2nd post in November.

A Begging Look?

Color Pencil 9"x9"

Rocky - a much loved Wheaten Terrier.   Is this what's called a beseeching look?   It clearly means something, but WHAT is Rocky 'beseeching' for?  a treat?  affection?  asking for forgiveness?   maybe, "Why do I have to get off the sofa?"

Or perhaps simply, "Not ANOTHER photograph, puh-lease!"

FEATHERS!

Color Pencil  9"x12"

"Feathers" being a soulful lass.

A sweet girl who's real life is not at all soulful, just full of BOUNCE and shared with Jessie (red husky); Karin (silver grey husky); and Jack (australian shepherd).   Feathers (a recuse) lineage is "we think, Belgian Tervuren mix..she is the brindle colored, smallest of the pack."

So the only one of the gang whose portrait is outstanding is Karin...and she will be up very soon.

'COOKIE!' starring Maggie

Pastel 8"x10"

A wild and whacky view of Maggie, a stately Beagle, stirred into action by the call, "COOKIE!"

Maggie is much loved and spoiled by Diana, owner of Natural Animal on Sherbrooke.   That wavy paper is because I stupidly did portrait on newsprint paper, then the image came out great so I kept it.

To prove her wide eyed anticipation is true to life, here's the photo on which the above was based.  NB I held the camera, waved the bait, called "COOKIE!" and took the photo.  That's multi-tasking.

JESSIE & (coming soon) KARINA

Pastel 16"x18"

A WIP, obviously!   And a mother and daughter portrait - !

Stepping into the unknown with more radical colors.   Reference is from a group shot.  Karina is mother of Jessie and you can see their affection for each other from the way their faces are pressed together!

Will take a few more days to wrap my head around finishing it.   Must keep style uniform, faces on target...and DON'T MESS UP, LIZ!

My "wall" below gives you an idea of relative size.
The black/white photo of a clock tower is 8"x10", and Jessie is on paper 18"x24":  Jessie's up a) for the photo and b) so I can lock down what comes next (!);  and the finished work is there so I can relax and enjoy before they're packed away.

You can see TWO Jessies below.
The one on far right is a pencil sketch about 9"x9"

JESSIE

Color Pencil 9"x9"

Jess hanging out on the couch.

She lives the good life in California with Laurie and 3 mates:  Feathers, Jack (see below) and Karina, another husky.   Group photos of "the crew" are delish:  all of 'em grinning at the camera so that makes four popcorn pink tongues panting with pleasure, perhaps a portrait!  (How about that for alliteration!)

JACK & Small Friend

Pastels 9"X10"

JACK is an Australian shepherd, he's partially blind and a rescue.    He lives with Laurie and 3 rescue mates, 2 huskies and a collie mix.  He's a lucky boy!   Looking at him and his buddies in photos you can see what a totally happy bunch they are.

Laurie.  Time to extol her.   She's one of those people who obsessively posts to rescue dogs, she trolls the shelters and their websites and thanks to her (and the thousands of others who network similarly) countless dogs, cats, horses, hamsters and more are saved from the countdown.

Jack won my heart for both his expression and his small friend.

Cat of the Year?

Pastel 16"x18"

Actually, "Year of the Cat"

In Vietnam the Year of the Cat begins February 3rd.
(In China it will be the Year of the Bunny, but that's another story.)

LULU is my chosen star.
A dynamic Sphynx, she was about 9 months when this portrait was done last spring.   All the qualities of the Year's cat apply to her:  determined, strong, resilient, confident and - totally fearless when faced with a camera!

PS  Her picture has been buried in a Gallery ever since this blog began.   With the Cat Year coming up, it was obviously her time to star in a post.

Extreme Weather in Scotland?

Pastel  18"x24"

Above is based upon a real scene, the highlands of Scotland with a pinch of sun and a windriven rainstorm blowing in.   Weather up there is swiftly and violently changable.  As you can see I opted to display the storm with DRAMA!

It hangs in my sitting room.  I'm intrigued that it still intrigues me, I keep seeing what I never saw when I 'painted' it.  Strange.

Rebekah: Senior Years

Color Pencil 10"x12"
Orig photo below

Rebekah starred in an earlier post (see here), as young 'Beckie', a delicious skittish pose, since - for her portrait - pure delight seemed the better memory to frame.

This sketch was from one of the last photos taken of her - she died late summer 2010.  It was not chosen for the portrait since both the person who commissioned the piece and I felt her expression was a bit too pensive and sad.

However, poignant though it is, it's Rebekah.
The photo from which it's taken is below.

CHANGE OF PACE - SCENERY!!

Watercolor  11"x14"

It's based on a canyon in Wyoming, Wolf Canyon or something.  Sarah and I hiked up it over 10 years ago - yikes!   Color scheme is not Wyoming, more sandstone Utah-ish.

Comments very welcome - negative or positive.  I find I can stare at this quite contentedly but I bet some think it's too loony tunes to view.   Don't hold back, it fascinates me to get other opinions....ummmmm, sometimes!

AKIKO

Pastel/Color Pencil  9"x10"

Akiko is a rescue who came to Montreal from Taiwan.
Here she is being driven to her safe haven, eleveneleven rescue.
Sitting in the passenger seat of the car she's staring forward with SUCH concentration it's hard not to wonder if she was "looking forward" to a new and happy future.  (I also wondered what she thought of the snow.)  There's a hint of a smile there too!

To visit Akiko's page

You can always donate while you're there!

"Chi"

Color Pencil 10"x12"

Long haired Chihuahua, Chi is boss of Caroline, founder of eleveneleven rescue, an awesome organisation and the way home for hundreds of cats, dogs and other critters.

Color pencil will be a more frequent medium from now on - the environment I'm working in doesn't permit pastel - darn!   The one-a-day routine is (I hope!) back on track.

CAT IN ARMS

Pastel 14"x16"

Furry, purry and adores being "in arms".   She relishes life with Abigail, two of her own and Jericho, a Shepherd who would be held if he could be held.  I believe there is a photo of Jericho in Gallery #2.

YES YES I know - no whiskers!   If I can remember where the original is I will repost WITH whiskers.

VIOLET

Pastel 8"x10"

I understand she was a calm quiet lady and, of course, much loved.
The name suits her, I think.
